Missing FX in REAPER

How to troubleshoot plugins that don't appear in the FX browser

The Problem

For a while I was troubled with the issue of one specific plugin not appearing in my FX browser within REAPER. Rescanning and clearing the cache didn’t seem to work– in fact, during the dialog that quickly runs through all of the plugins as they’re scanned, I saw it! So REAPER was definitely seeing the plugin in question.

Why wasn’t it showing up? It stumped me for days.

No amount of searching or checking improperly named developer folders gave me the plugin I was searching for.

The Solution

Navigating to REAPERs resource folder (\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\REAPER on Windows) we see a file called “reaper-vstplugins64.ini”. In it lists all of the plugins available to REAPER.

In my instance, the plugin entry in question was appeneded with “!!!VSTi” incorrectly designating it as a VST Instrument.

Example reaper-vstplugins64

With REAPER closed, I simply removed the “!!!VSTi”, saved the document and started REAPER again. Everything worked perfectly, and my plugin popped right up.

Extra note

The reaper-vstplugins64.ini file is a great place to do batch editing of names and developers rather than through the FX browser window. As always, make sure REAPER is closed while you edit this file, as it can be overwritten back to its default if REAPER is still running.
